Is this what they call 'Freedom'?

although a night in a Mexican Homeless shelter would have provided lots of material :)

This is great. I enjoy reading your posts so much because it is the opposite of what I get to do, traveling with my kids. I can't even imagine how free you must feel!

Christine: Oddly enough, I think I did the exact same thing when I got to Puerto Vallarta last year: I took the right bus the wrong way from the airport and ended up in some small little town in the mountains rather than old town Puerto Vallarta. When the bus stopped in the small town and everyone got off, I tried to ask the bus driver if they were going back the other way, failed, and just waited until a new driver came in, shook his head, and started driving. There was a couple anxious minutes :)

    Amazing...

I must admit that sounds awesome. Even sleeping on your pack at the bus station. Though, it would be more than a little out of character, I really need to take an unplanned trip like this.

Great story, Christine. I agree, traveling on a whim is often a very freeing experience. Expect the unexpected. I hope your adventure continues to be great.

Way to take it all in stride and embrace the freedom of your current situation. Sounds like this trip will certainly be an adventure.

Sleeping in an airport is not fun. But great for the budget! Way to be free and just go with the flow without a plan. You have my full admiration - I'd be having a nervous breakdown by now.

I have, in the past, spent the night in bus stations and railway stations ... forced on me by considerations other than budgetary ... and I wonder why they always seem to build such facilities in the coldest place for miles arpund?

Actually, that was sweet that a stranger gave the suggestion for the homeless shelter. A roof over your head. Like you, if I can help it, I won't go that far.

    Look forward to more adventures.

Funny! Yep, unplanned, spontaneous travel is the only way to go, follow your whims. It all works out, even as a family and the moments that don't work out makes for great writing and memories!

A free life is about following your bliss and inner directives. There are no rules and its much easier and more rewarding than most know. Those highlights always pop up when you least expect them. ;)

What an adventure! Doing things on a whim is much more fun and exciting than planning every single step of a certain trip.

Sometimes life is just better unplanned, eh? The best stories come from those times that you didn't mean to go to. Though I would have loved to hear about your night in a Mexican homeless shelter...

Wow, you have a lot of patience, sometimes the best things happened when nothing is planned. But I think a little planning especially for traveling accommodations is crucial, then don't have a plan for activities, that's the way to go.
